A History of the LV Pochette Métis Bag
In this Louis Vuitton Pochette Metis Review, we’ll be covering all the major questions everyone asks. Why is it popular? What fits inside? Monogram or reverse monogram? After our review, we hope you’ll be armed with all the information you need to find out if this really is your dream bag…
The icon that is the Louis Vuitton pochette metis bag was introduced to Louis Vuitton’s range of luxury bags in 2012. If you’ve recently been trying to source this bag you’ll probably be aware of how hard it can be to get. This wasn’t always the case, however, as originally when the bag was released it was easy to get hold of. Then in 2014, its popularity began to soar due to the rise of celebrities and influencers wearing this must-have designer crossbody bag and as demand grew, the stock didn’t.
After a few years of the bag experiencing a whirlwind of demand, Louis Vuitton decided to release the pochette metis in reverse monogram, infrarouge monogram (now discontinued), and various leathers such as epi and monogram empreinte leather.
2018 saw the pochette metis reworked with a braided handle and edging on leather versions of the bag. Whilst the braided handle style remains sought after it has now been discontinued. If you’re looking for a braided handle version of the bag the only place to find one now is on the preloved market.

Why is Pochette Metis so popular?
The Louis Vuitton pochette metis bag is so popular due to Instagram influencers wearing the bag and how easy the bag is to style. The LV pochette metis comes in a variety of monogram canvas and empreinte leather in various colours, as well as limited edition prints.
The Pochette Metis is arguably one of the best designer crossbody bags due to a detachable, adjustable strap making it easy to wear cross-body or on your shoulder. It’s roomy enough to carry everyday essentials and holds its structure well whilst being worn.
The Pochette Metis Bag Dimensions / Size
The LV Pochette Metis bag currently only comes in one size, and it is a small to medium-sized bag. The dimensions of the pochette metis bag are:
Length – 25cm / 9.8 inches
Height – 19 cm / 7.5 inches
Width – 7 cm / 2.8 inches
What can the Pochette Metis bag fit inside?
Inside the two main compartments of the bag, you can fit a full-sized purse, some keys, and a small A5 book or iPad mini.
In the zipper compartment on the back of the bag, you can fit a small purse, cardholder, or any other small flat object like a passport/travel document.
Louis Vuitton Pochette Metis Reverse Vs Monogram
If you are debating a monogram canvas version of this bag it’s always a hard choice to decide between the normal and reverse monogram. Watch our video on YouTube below comparing the two to help you decide.
The pros of the normal monogram canvas are that it goes with more outfits. Due to it being more of a solid colour and is slightly cheaper than the reverse version of the bag.
The cons of the normal monogram are that the bag features vachetta leather detail. Over time the vachetta leather will age and darken. Whilst some people like this process and how vachetta leather looks, it can make the bag look older.
The pros of the reverse monogram canvas are that it stands out more than the normal monogram. It also features black leather detail which won’t darken over time, therefore, the bag will generally look newer for longer.
The cons of the reverse monogram pochette metis are that it is slightly more expensive than the normal monogram, and can be harder to get hold of.

Different ways you can wear the Pochette Metis Bag
You can wear this bag three different ways:
- Use the leather top handle to carry it
- you can use the detachable shoulder strap to use as a shoulder bag
- You can use the strap to turn it into a crossbody bag. The most popular way that this bag is generally worn is as a crossbody bag, which is incredibly comfortable and allows for hands-free wearing.
Louis Vuitton Pochette Metis Empreinte Vs Monogram Comparison
Okay, so you’re set on the lv metis as your next designer bag, now it’s time to face the next big question… do you go for a monogram version or one of the beautifully coloured empreinte leather versions?
We’ve created yet another video to help you make this decision.
The key differences we’ve seen are that the monogram canvas versions are generally harder wearing and cheaper in price, however they aren’t available in the amazing solid colours that make the leather versions really stand out.
Our advice is that if you are buying the bag to be an everyday workhorse, to opt for a monogram canvas version of the bag or a dark coloured Empreinte leather. If you are looking for something to stand out in a lighter or brighter colour then go for a leather version. It’s also worth noting that over time as the leather on the empreinte versions softens the monogram print can slowly fade out of the leather.
Pochette Metis Strap
This particular bag from Louis Vuitton comes with a detachable and adjustable strap. This strap is perfect for cross body use and can be adjusted as the strap features a buckle adjuster.
The strap is simply clipped onto the hoops on the side of the bag. This means that you can easily use a different strap with the bag if so desired. Some people like to purchase a thicker strap from Louis Vuitton which they may find more comfortable to wear cross-body.
Pochette Metis Organizer / Liners and hardware protector
Some absolutely essential items that you will need for a metis bag are some clear hardware protectors to stop the front of the bag scratching and some luxury bag liners to protect the lining of your bag. For a small investment in comparison to the bag itself, both of these products will keep your bag looking much newer for longer and increase the resale value of the bag if you decide to sell it one day.
Pochette Metis Recall & Common Issues
Whilst the PM is one of the most popular Louis Vuitton bags, sadly it is also known as one of the more problematic bags from the brand.
Due to the structure, size and intricacy of this bag it has fallen victim to some common problems. These include:
- Glazing on edges of bag melting / coming away from the bag
- Cracking of the canvas and leather on the sides of the bag where the bag concertinas out.
- The canvas is not laying properly flat on the front bottom corners of the bag if it hasn’t been constructed perfectly.
- The front gold closure scratching. Use a clear hardware protector to help stop this happening.
It’s worth noting as of 2019 Louis Vuitton has now started making this bag out of a thicker canvas to help reduce some of these issues.
If you have any of these issues with your bag we advise taking it to a Louis Vuitton store or contacting their customer services team.
Is the Louis Vuitton pochette Metis discontinued?
No, the pochette metis bag is not discontinued. There are certain limited edition styles of the Louis Vuitton pochette metis bag that are discontinued and they are featured in the limited edition pricing table at the top of this blog.
In 2018 Louis Vuitton customer services were telling customers that the bag was going to be discontinued. Whether this was an outright lie to create panic purchases, or whether the brands really thought it would discontinue this bag, the pochette metis bag is still very much available.

Over the past few years, as this bag has seen incredible demand due to its popularity, the pochette metis has regularly been out of stock resulting in customers being forced to join waiting lists to get their hands on one of these bags. However, as it currently stands in late 2020 it does appear the monogram and reverse monogram versions of this bag are now much more readily available.
As with all Louis Vuitton bags they can only be purchased directly from the brand at a boutique or the official website.
